While Addison is better than 90 percent built out, prime real estate remains and redevelopment opportunities at and near the Addison Airport are anticipated for the future. The city’s business community has expanded rapidly over recent years. New developments include the 374,000 square foot Millennium office building and the smaller 100,000 square foot Parkside Corporate Center buildings that were completed in 2000. An additional 324,000 square feet of office/warehouse/showroom space to the northeast of the Addison Airport at the corner of Westgrove Drive and Excel Parkway also finished construction in 2001.
For residents, one of the main draws to the Addison area is the abundance of things to do. The Parks and Recreation Department oversees over 118 acres of parklands in the town. Les Lac Linear Park is the largest and features a 2.5 mile lighted jogging and bike trail, a pond, two playgrounds, picnic tables and several sport facilities. The park is located right across from the Addison/Trinity Complex. The complex includes a recreation center with indoor basketball, volleyball, recreational classes and other amenities. Those who know the Dallas area know that Addison is a shopper’s paradise offering everything from unique antiques to the latest fashion trends. The Dallas Galleria Mall has been ranked as one of the top 10 visitor experiences in Dallas. This mall boasts upscale department stores, shops, restaurants, a movie theatre and an ice skating rink. Some other shopping areas in Addison include the Valley View Mall and the Village on the Parkway. For arts and entertainment, the Water Tower Theatre is one of the most innovative facilities in the nation. Many concerts and plays are featured here during the concert season. The facility plays host to several special events each year including the North Texas Jazz Festival, Taste of Addison, Addison Oktoberfest and the Rockin’ Christmas Party. Attractions such as the Historic West End Shopping and Entertainment Center in Downtown Dallas, the Texas Stadium, the Dallas Museum of Art, Symphony Center and an amusement park, Six Flags over Texas, are located nearby. Within a 100 mile radius of Addison are more than 50 lakes and 100 public and private golf courses for additional recreational activities. Addison is served by two school districts. The Dallas Independent School District is the twelfth largest in the nation and serves a 351 square mile area. Several of the schools in this district have been touted as either exemplary by a regional level and/or recognized at a national level. The Carrollton/Farmers Branch Independent School District has also won several awards for many of their campuses. Located a short drive away is the Brookhaven College and the University of Texas at Dallas. Addison is located in an area that was once called Peters Colony. The history of this town dates back to 1846 when Preston Witt built a house on White Rock Creek. The area was not known as Addison until 1902 and was named after Addison Robertson, who served as the community’s second postmaster. The city was incorporated on June 15, 1953. Addison continues to be a vital and growing town. Building on past successes in office space, hotels, restaurants, retail, and residential, Addison is a town for today and for tomorrow. |
